When major engine problems arise, there are several different engine repair options to suit a wide variety of needs. Depending on the type of repairs needed, the overall condition of the motor and vehicle, and whether you are looking to simply get your vehicle back on the road or want to greatly extend its lifetime, some options are a better fit than others. Read on for a brief description of the benefits of and differences between the different options available. What is the Difference & Which Is the Best Solution for Your Engine Problem?
New Engine Replacement
This is the most costly option, and most experts agree that correctly remanufactured or rebuilt engines offer performance on par with that of a new one. That being said, a new engine still costs far less than a new car or truck!
Used Engine Replacement
Used engine replacement is typically regarded as a somewhat temporary fix because used engines often begin to have problems and require repairs of their own. This may be a good option to fit a tight budget and keep you on the road for a time while you plan for a more permanent repair solution. It can also be beneficial to replace a motor that has very high mileage with a used one which has low mileage.
Repair Original Engine
Engine repair refers to repairing or replacing only the specific components which are causing the current problem. This does not necessarily include completely disassembling and cleaning the all components, or replacing all of the parts. This is usually the most affordable and best option to solve minor or component-specific problems such as repairing a cracked head gasket. A blown head gasket is a good example of when your car or truck requires major engine repair, but not necessarily a complete engine overhaul. Repairing only specific components may not, however, ensure that you don’t run into different engine problems down the road. When considering engine repair, it is best to have a thorough engine inspection and take into account the overall condition of the engine, including the components which are still currently functioning.

Rebuild Original Engine (Overhaul)
Engine rebuilding (or an engine overhaul) is done in local automotive repair shops and requires expert diagnostic skills, precision, and a deep understanding of the vehicle’s theory of operation. This relies heavily on the experience, training, and skill level of the auto mechanic performing the rebuilding. The quality of parts used also carries a great deal of importance. For this reason, it is always best to check a local repair shop’s reviews and credentials before deciding on the best auto repair shop to trust with rebuilding your engine. When comparing engine rebuild cost estimates, be sure to ask what hard parts the quote includes. For example, Auto Service Experts engine rebuilds replace all soft parts and most hard parts including timing belt or chain replacements.
Many auto engine repair/ engine rebuilding shops in San Antonio only guarantee their rebuilt engines with a short warranty of 30 to 90 days, and remanufactured engines usually come with a warranty of a year or two. Because of our confidence in the experience and skill of our mechanics as well as the quality of parts and equipment we use, we guarantee our engine rebuilds to stand the test of time. Remanufactured Engine Replacement
Remanufactured engines (or short blocks) are completely disassembled and rebuilt at a factory, then shipped to the auto repair facility where they are installed in your vehicle. Remanufactured motors are easily available and much more affordable than new ones, however, the quality can vary due to the fact that some engine remanufacturing facilities reuse more parts than others, and some include more updated components than others.
***Auto Service Experts has established long-term working relationships with the most reliable and reputable engine remanufacturers in San Antonio in order to consistently ensure the highest level of quality for our customers.
